Tuesday Blog: College Football is better when it is personal, especially Michigan vs. Ohio State
Jim Harabaugh was asked this past week about whether or not he has any respect for Ohio State Head Coach Ryan Day, who his team will face this Saturday in a massive college football heavyweight fight. Now, Harabaugh`s response was very telling. He said “"It's all about our preparation for Ohio, the days, the minutes, the hours, everything leading up to this game. That's where our focus is. Preparing ourselves -- planning, practice and then execute. Anything else is irrelevant.`` That is an answer without giving an answer, which is to say Jim Harbaugh has no respect for Ryan Day. For the record, Ryan Day feels the same about Jim Harabaugh, famously saying on a Big Ten head coaches' conference call, that they (Ohio State) would, “hang 100” on Michigan. That is the reason why college football is better when it's personal because it`s real.
Now, it is no secret that the Michigan and Ohio State rivalry has always been just a little more personal, but it is taken to another level of discontent when the leaders and motivators of the respective teams hate each other. It trickles down to the team and all members of the program. Then when you add the history and tradition of this rivalry, and then the sign stealing scandal, the harbaugh suspension, it all adds together for makings of a powder keg that will be a historic college football game, and it will because above all its personal.
And it is for that reason that I am going to hammer the Michigan Wolverines, -3. Happy Thanksgiving!
